Dexamethasone Cleared Information in Q&A
Can I use this bottle of previously prescribed antibiotic eyedrops for pink eye? I had pink eye last year and the doctor prescribed "Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Dexamethasone Ophthalmic Suspension LSP". In fact, I'm not really sure if this is the antibiotic so I'd like confirmation on that, too. If it is, could I use it right now for my eye? Will it clear up by tomorrow? I can't miss school on Monday! (new semester)

Im in ur city- Killin ur Batman. replied: "If it is indeed the antibiotics that were prescribed, it's perfectly fine. Make sure these are indeed the right eye drops first, you, your doctor, or parents are the only ones who would know if these are indeed the same eye drops."

amandajblocker replied: "I wouldnt. Chances are that the medication is out of date, check that it should be on the bottle. But if you are one of the people who put the dropper on your eye to get the eye drop in, there is already pink eye in the medication, and you'd just be reinfecting yourself. You dont have to miss school monday, just tell anyone who asks, you poked your self. just dont touch that eye for anything, not even makeup sorry!!"

versantly replied: "the drops may be contaminated. see your doctor for a new Rx."

Toddler with Eczema of the eyelids seeking safe alternative treatment.? My daughter, now 14 months, began symptoms at 9 months on her eyelids. It began after we came home from a trip to Disney, so we thought maybe it was due to sudden weather changes or some crazy infection from traveling or water change. But it persisted. We thought it may be an allergy so we did a deep home cleansing, used all green cleaning products, anti allergy laundry soaps, made the cat live outside and banned the dog from all rooms but the front porch, all with no relief. Used otc petroleum/mineral oil ointment with a little satisfaction at first, but then nothing. Cleansed eyes with baby soap. Pinned hair up to keep it out of her eyes and scrubbed her hands clean as though she were a girl in a bubble. Still no relief. On severe days she ends up with "shiners". The eyelids will pink, then purple, get shiny and sometimes get dusty dryness. They irritate her as she will rub at them like she is tired. I live in the northeast, she started in March, it's now August and the weather changes have not made any difference as far as level of irritation. The symptoms subside during sleep and graduate after she wakes up. Then on to 3 pediatrician visits, and one pediatric opthalmologist visit, to find out that it's eczema. She was written an rx for Tobradex which is a steroid ointment (tobramycin w/ dexamethasone) and it cleared. We were told if it didn't clear it up then they would prescribe an oral steroid. It did work, however upon completion of the prescribed period of time and voila, it's returning, as would a completion of an oral steroid regimen. Has anyone found a more natural approach to daily treatment? Is it worth consulting with a dermatologist? As discussed in this message reel, persistent use of steroid ointments increase blood flow to the eyes and can cause permanent damage. I want an effective and safe treatment plan. To those out there suffering from eczema my heart goes out to you.

Andrew D replied: "You need to see a pediatric dermatologist if you can find one in your area. These are sometimes only available in large university medical centers. An ophthalmologist or dermatologist would do, however. Be sure to inform them of the previous diagnosis. There is no safe "alternative" treatment for eczema of the eyes. Frequently, steroid treatments are the only effective treatment. Doctors are aware of the risks involved in any prescription they give. The benefits usually outweigh any risks. The risk here is the potential damage to eyesight if left untreated."

babysoft replied: "I feel for your struggle. My son suffered with severe eczema starting at 6 weeks through the full first year. Our pediatrician said he was one of the 10 worst cases of eczema he had seen in 30 years of pediatrics. After 11 Rx and 3 nonsteroidal Rx treatments that didn't work as well as 3 pediatricians and 2 dermatologists I had had enough. We were unable to kiss our baby and had to handle him gently due to the severity. Many days I didn't take him out of the house because he was so subject to infections because of his heart breaking condition. I did find a natural treatment that was 3 fold. Arbonne Baby Care skin products, Arbonne Smart nutritional hybrid vitamins for kids, and probiotic based on a 2001 study on eczema that was published by Lancet. More about this is available through my website. I do hope this information has been helpful. Considering your daughter is no where near as severe as my son I would imagine that just changing her skin care would be sufficient. I have come to have a great passion for the Arbonne products because after taking this information and a clear baby to the dermatologist for a check up I shared with him my research and he was already familiar with it all. The unpronounceable ingredients, sulfates, low standards of quality, Ph balance vs Ph correctness, animal products, petroleum products etc... he knew all this and never shared a bit of it with me. In fact he recommended products to me that contained these known irritants. He really fired me up. My sons medical record shows that he cleared up due to Arbonne and probiotic and the Dr seemed happy for me but wasn't interested at all in sharing this information with any other patients. However, one week later at the pediatrician he asked what I had done in detail and has since researched himself and begun recommending Arbonne products to his patients. I wish your daughter well. I'm sure she has beautiful eyes."

What can cause my throat to look like this (see video)? It started two months ago as just a simple sore throat; no other symptoms like high fever, nausea, cough, etc. It was just pain in the back of my throat. After a few weeks, I developed several white patches in the throat near the uvula, similar to the one seen in this video. I decided to see the doctor, and he reasoned it could either be Epstein Barr Virus or Strep, and that Strep was more likely. He started me on clarithromycin and dexamethasone, and after two or three days, everything cleared up and I felt fine. However, a few days after that (while I was still on the antibiotic), the throat pain started coming back, and yesterday I developed a new white patch near the uvula (as seen in the video). He switched my antibiotic to moxifloxacin, and now I've been taking that since yesterday. He never did a throat culture, as he felt it wasn't necessary... but I'm wondering if there are any other bugs out there that can possibly cause this appearance and symptomatology? I'm hoping that this new antibiotic will do the trick, but I'm losing confidence... Thanks for your help! Oh, and by the way, I apologize for the video... it's not the greatest... it was kind of hard to angle the camera just right and get a light in there at the same time, but I think it gets the job done.

boogeywoogy replied: "I don't know......... it looks pretty normal to me, and I've done 1000s of intraoral exams. Your tonsils are of normal size and color, as are your tongue, uvula and soft palate; the posterior pharyngeal wall may be a bit iffy. I saw no white spots other than the reflection of the light source against the saliva on the oral surfaces. You may want to get tested for HPV, since the antibiotics are doing nothing for you. Since you aren't responding to the current treatment, see an ENT for a second opinion."

Having eye problems with my gang, anyone else experiencing this? OK about 2 weeks ago one of my Flat Coats started coming down with major eye buggers in one eye. Not the hard ones but really snotty ones. The next day it started watering and I thought perhaps an infection or just an eye cold so I applied this eye ointment I got from the vet on an earlier occasion mfg by Bausch and Lomb for one of my Aussies that had an irritation going on. It cleared it up in a day or two but yesterday my other Flat Coat came down with something similar and this morning one of my Aussies has it as well in one of his eye`s. Now it is Spring finally here in the North West, (Oregon) and the leaves are coming out and the trees are in bloom. Looking at my glass top picnic table it`s covered in a light green dust I figure to be pollen. By the way I live in a forest. Now I have lived here in Oregon since 2000 and yes the weather does dictate runny eye`s, cold, rainy, hot, etc. but this time it seems to be more of an irritation that I have not had to deal with before. Do you think it could be the pollen getting into the wells of their eye`s? I treated my 2 dogs that presently have it with the same ointment this morning. Again it has no name on the tube but the ingredients are; neomycin polymyxin B sulphates dexamethasone and ophthalmic. Do any vet techs or folks that live here in the NW have anything similar happening with their dogs? As well do any of you treat with the same or something similar, and what? No smart a** answers like go to your vet. I just want to know if anyone else has or is experiencing anything similar, what their solution was and if I`m taking the appropriate steps with what I`m using to clear it up. If all else fails to the vet on Monday. Good luck and God Bless ADD; OK this is a new one on me but can dogs get pink eye. I`ve actually asked a couple of breeder friends of mine and they say no, but i wonder, hmmmmm

Stalkers are cowardly thieves replied: "I had a run of gunky eyes a couple of weeks ago. I watched em but for one,who was quite gunky. Used my genocyn(sp)opthalmic drops for 2 days & cured"

Pilot~is on vac. beginning 5/2! replied: "Interesting...........Pilot gets that "I want to say on and off" during the year....but, due to allergies, he seems to get them more at this time of year. This morning we were to be on a flight to Peru, but instead it was delayed till the PM hrs. So, my hubby ran Pilot over to his Vet for our YEARLY run for small hot spots. It seems to be a regular run to the Dr., consistantly every year at this same time.....and month! SO.......I am guessing that either they have "pink eye"....contageous, and/or they are experiencing an allergic reaction to something in bloom, in your area. The forest holds many blooms this time of year as we all know. The gunk that Pilot gets is slimy, rather blackish from the dirt or dust, and I am forever cleaning out his eyes consistantly, every day or two. Though it comes in rather smaller "chunks", (sorry for the description... LOL!!), this time of year promotes larger ones due to the many buds, blooms, and new grass growth. Help in any way? I sure hope so, or at least it will give you something to ponder over. Have a wonderful day. :oPilot and I"

Jakesteddybear replied: "I am not in your area of the USA, but I do have one of my Great Pyrenees - that is allergic to a lot of things! I use the same type of ointment that you use, however I do have to take him in to vet to get an "allergy shot" 2-3 times a year they are longer lasting than the ointment. I hate using "allergy steriods" on myself and my dog, but sometimes that is all that will work that I have found. Good Luck - or try keeping your dog inside during the heavy pollen falling time."

wishnuwelltoo replied: "My old pack had an issue with eyes at our last house. The vets gave us an ointment for the eyes, but were unable to determine what the cause was since it was spring, and we were also restoring a house and we were doing insulation and drywall at the time. We had a lot of pine trees on our property there, and we were working on the house too. We lived on one side of the house and worked on the other side, but you know drywall dust just travels. It seemed to clear up once we finished the drywall. One of my dogs now has some puss around her eyes, nothing that alarms me, but the wind is up on the prairie, so I assumed that dirt was getting in her eyes. I typed "dogs pink eye" in search for questions asked, and it does appear that dogs can get pink eye and it takes a couple weeks to clear that up."

malpractice and the poor (different issue)? I had a situation in November 2006 where a nurse accidentally gave me 10 times the amount of dexamethasone I was supposed to take and I ended up going into shock for 2 days. I was critical during that time. But I'm on disability and the lawyer isn't taking my case - if I was a rich person they'd have a clear cut obvious case and so why can't I have a case too. Just because I'm on SSDI? Doesn't my life matter too? I guess only the lives of the wealthy matter. At least on this earth. I know lawyers say that's how it is - but don't any of you people have a conscience? when you have a disabled person where they did negligence? So what's stopping medical people from killing all these people? nothing in my mind. They can "accidentally" kill whatever undesireable people they want to kill and ther's nothing anyone can do about it. Well my life has value, and I want to sue these people and I want money for my suffering like any rich person would get. thank you

purple gurple replied: "Sorry about your situation! Where do you live? I know in Canada lawyers give clients an hourly rate for the cost of their services (ie. $ 200 / hr). If so try to go throw the yellow pages or contact people to find a non-profit lawyer. If you live in the US, lawyers are willing to work for a percentage of your win. If they lose the case, you still won't have to pay them. I hope this helps. Is there a free legal line you could call for further information?"

how to handle malpractice situation? on 10/30/06 a nurse called into the pharmacy a dosage of dexamethasone 10 times the amount that I was supposed to have. I read the doctors notes later and saw that the doctor wrote 0.25 large and clear anyone could have seen that. The nurse never caught her mistake and for 2 weeks I was on 10 times the amount and then on the 15th I tried telling them what happened and they didn't believe me that the first nurse messed up and so essentially what they did was put me in shock because I went from a ton of steroid to nothing and then finally on the night of the 16th the doctor finally intervened and put me back up high and then I tapered down and really suffered withdrawing from the nasty stuff. Anyway I think I have a good case for malpractice and I tried calling a lawyer and he's been traveling and I talked to him once though and he acted like I didn't have any damages because I surviv ed ( it was a life threatening situation) and because I'm disabled and don' make hardly any money. ?? what about my suffering? it's like the legal system is only here to help rich people.. if a Rich person goes through what I did they can get all kinds of damages and if it is me, on disability and they don't see anything that they can get - then they can't help me... it stinks. Rich people really do get all the breaks - they get more respect - everything is easier for them. They do get more respect..

Tammy S replied: "Since you didn't suffer any damage, you won't get a dime. My mother in law almost died from a med mix up from a colonoscopy, and she has major problems and stuff. But, she didn't try to sue and probably should have."

Woody replied: "You won't get much legal help, if they don't see a big pay day. If you don't get satisfaction from the doctor, you can still report this to the state medical board. They will investigate complaints that never get to the court room. If its justified, they may penalize him."

kate replied: "The attorney may be right, that damages would be based on your income so . . . but check your yellow pages and consult a second attorney. But be prepared, suits are pursued for damages and if you haven't lost wages (which is how they assess damages) then . . . Re: suffering, although everyone suffers , the legal system has not come up with $$ amounts to compensate that. The only thing they can do is relate to losses, like job / income if you were self employed and couldn't do that during that period. No one has ever set up a $$ comp chart for pain & suffering."

jloertscher replied: "Lawyers work on contingency fees. So your rich man/poor man argument doesn't hold water. If an attorney turned his nose up at it, I suspect that you don't have a case. Are you SURE that 0.25 mg is the proper dose. The supposed 'wrong' dose of 2.5 mg would seem to be more in line with what an adult would get. Typical adult doses rande from 1 to 4 mg."

Infected anal glands!? I brought my 2 year old Belgian Shepherd into the vet 2 weeks ago to have his anal glands look at because he was "leaking" from them an pooping blood in them. Turns out they were infected. Hes never had any problems with them before. The vet gave him a shot of Dexamethasone and a Shot of Penicillin which each shot was $30.00. He didnt even ask me if he could do it, he just did. My bill between everything he did, the shots, 14 days of Cephalexin and the physical consult when all he did was give 2 needles came to $200.00. I bring him back in wednesday for a re check. His glands are still leaking and the vet says thats normal. But there is still blood. They dont seem to be bothering him I just wipe them with a warm cloth and go. How long will it take to clear this infection? I cannot afford any more vet bills since I have been laid off (please dont say I shouldnt own dogs). I put over $2000 into this dog. I have $200 to work with..thats all. My vet don't do payment plans I asked. Is there anything I can do to help him out? Any natural stuff? Could I put polysporn on his bumhole to help with the infection? Will I keep getting infections like this if I routinly have his glands done? I feed Kirklands. I tried RAW and I cannot afford to pay $100 per month to feed him RAW. Could I give him a raw chicken back twice a day to firm up his poop? The vet said no because of bacteria but then again my vet doesnt agree with RAW. I asked about polysporn because thats all i have here. Is the leaking normal? I know the area may take longer to heal because of where it is as butts are a natural breeding ground for bacteria. But I am wiping him about 5 times a day. Mostly after poops. Some are firm some can be soft. But it could be the pills doing that to him. Ive had nothing but problems since I got him..the leakage went away for a few days after he was at the vet but then it came back and he said it was normal that some dog express their glands like that and its something I may have to live with. I just bought a bag of the kirklands Lamb and rice. The formula here in Canada doesnt have any wheat or corn. RAW chicken last time firmed up his poop good.

I hAtE "I lOvE eMoS" replied: "sounds weird"

sinjin replied: "Make sure your dogs poops are not runny. Keep the anal glands expressed yourself. If your dog's not making tootsie rolls, the anal glands will keep getting infected. feeding him pumpkin will help also you might try metamucil. What are you feeding? EDIT I don't like what your feeding. Do lamb and rice. The kirklands is generic science diet. See if they have lamb and rice. I've noticed chicken makes dogs have the runs. Don't feed raw anything. When the poops are like tootsie rolls the anal glands express themselves."

hannah replied: "this may sound a little silly but try putting a little neosporrin or something on wen u clean his butt it may help with the infection"

Please Any VETRINARIANS or TECHS!? Earlier today my dog was outside, I brought him in and finished up my dishes. When I checked on him 1hr later, he had a really bad allergic reaction. His inner pink tear duct was really inflammed and reddish/pink. It was popping out of his eyelid. I have seen this happen once before and put Neo-Poly-Dex, which was his perscribed medicine since he always had eye allergies. I figured this would clear it up, and if it didn't I would call the Vet. Thank God, it did and now I put the reminder in his eye and it seems to not have subsided this time? Any idea what this could be? Also, my father is a Pharmacist, so he recommended I use Bausch & Lomb eye drops from now on. It has all the same ingredients as neopolydex only without the steriod. Which he says will eventually cause cataracts in his eyes. Is this correct, and am I safe using these replacement drops from now on? The ingredients are Neomycin, polymyxin B Sulfates and dexamethasone in the B & L eye drops. Thank You So much!!

mousesicle replied: "if it looks like this its cherry eye. it can be fixed with a simple surgery though "

CatahoulaLover replied: "I think if it doesn't go down in a few days it could possibly be cherry eye. And as far as using human eye drops I wouldn't trust it!"

Jennifer T replied: "As much as folks here would like to help, it is imposible to examine your dog over the net, and giving this kind of advice without examining the dog would be dangerous. I would give your vet a call iwth this question in the morning, as they would be more familiar with yur pup. Good luck."

♥My Pit Bull is cuter than yers♥ replied: "For the love of GOD...DO NOT SELF MEDICATE YOUR DOG!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't care if your dad is a pharmacist - He's NOT a Vet. It sounds like cherry eye. Stop putting things on it, and get your dog to the Vet NOW."

BB replied: "This sounds like "cherry" eye. You will need to see your veterinarian to have this fixed. My dog had this when he was a puppy. It will not heal itself. You should only use eye drops prescribed by your vet. Being a pharmacist, your father is very knowledgeable about these things, but you still should only use what your vet recommends. Best of luck with your dog!"

stulisa42 replied: "Yep, it's probably a cherry eye. The steroids are what helps the swelling go down,,,so they should be in the med. They may eventually cause problems if used constantly, but you AREN'T supposed to use them regularly anyway, so if used correctly, the vet meds won't cause a problem. A cherry eye can be corrected with a very quick and minor procedure to remove it. If you have it taken care of, you won't need to use medicine constantly in the eye/s. The med your dad wants you to use has dex in it which is an anti allergy med, which is fine for allergies, but using it regularly in a dog will weaken it's entire immune system,,,,as well as causing the bladder to leak. So........bottom line is DON'T use other medicines without knowing what problems it can cause in animals. Many things that are safe for people are NOT safe for animals. Also don't use medicines long term that are made for short term use. The answer is to go on to the vet and have them remove the swollen gland."

Tammy C replied: "I don't know what your dad means when he says that the Bausch and Lomb drops have no steroids. You list dexamethasone as an ingredient in them, and dexamethasone IS a steroid,so I don't see a difference. Also, have you tried giving the dog Benadryl for his allergies? And the cherry eye surgery takes about ten minutes,so why not have it done and relieve the dog's discomfort?"

creamy lotion like cm starting at 5 dpo? today I am 6 dpo and yesterday I noticed a lot of creamy lotion like cm and i have it again today. this is my 3rd month of clomid and i also took dexamethasone this month so i dont know if either one of those could have caused it. itsjustme replied: "I guess it can go either way with the creamy cm....I had an unusually creamy cm last month after I o'd right up until the day before AF started. I thought it was a sure sign i was pg but no luck. I'm in your same boat right now with the sleepless nights and being dead tired all the time waiting another 6 days to test. It's frustrating that the signs of preg can be so similar to pms signs - I say we all just have to think positive but somehow try not to obsess so that if AF shows up we're not too bummed. GOOD LUCK - I do hope this is your month for a BFP."
