First of all, I would ask your doctor what is the best approach to losing the weight. I am not 100% sure, but could it be possible that you need to have your synthroid dose changed??
I looked up some information on the web and added the site for you to look at.
I am sorry you are so frustrated! I hope you find your answer and wish you the best of luck."

Does synthroid or total thyroidectomy affect menstrual cycles? Hi,
I would like to know any advice anybody can tell me regarding my unique situation. Last month on March 7th I began taking Metformin (I have PCOS). My period began on March 12. (Note - I was very regular before taking the Metformin so my period starting on time was not due to the met. My endo put me on it to help lose weight and to ovulate). I had a total thryoidectomy (goiter) on March 19th and began taking Synthroid that following day on the 20th. I had sex on the 29th of that month (w/my husband :)), and my next period should have began on the 12th of this month. I have not received my period yet. Is it possible that all the meds I am taking are affecting my cycle? Could it be my thryoid levels since the surgery are affecting my cycle? Or, could it actually be that I am pregnant? Any advise at all would be greatly appreciated! I'm scared to take a preg test as I am tired of being let down. Thanks for any help!!
Sparkles is having a Boy 7-16-09 replied: "I had my thyroid removed due to cancer and was put on metformin as well for PCOS. As soon as my Endo upped my synthroid I was pregnant. It took me 3 years but I finally got pregnant. nothing ever messed with my cycle but if your thyroid meds aren't just right it can affect you becoming pregnant. make sure they are checking your thyroid levels often as the med dosage needs to be adjusted frequently. It is possible to get pregnant even with all these obsticles. I hope I an give you some hope. You might even be pregnant right now."
When is it time to surgically remove the thyroid gland due to multinodular thyroid disease? I have had multinodular thyroid disease for many years. My thyroid gland works perfectly, but I have been monitored by various endocrinologists for years. I take Synthroid to get the nodules in check. However, in January, my tests (an ultrasound and a nuclear medicine scan) showed I now had 6 large fluid filled cold nodules. The Dr assured me they are benign. My Dr. increased my thyroid dosage for 6 months to see if there would be any improvement. I just had another ultrasound prior to my doctor's appt next week & now I have 30-40 nodules. I have some difficulty swallowing, especially at night if I lay on my back, and my neck sometimes hurts. I am I know that the medical people are reluctant to remove a thyroid gland that works, but I am beginning to feel that maybe it is time for the surgery. I am 54 and in good health otherwise. Has anyone else had this situation? Do you think I should discuss this with the endocrinologist and maybe get a 2nd opinion?
Joseph replied: "I certainly agree, you need to see another endocrinologist and get a 2nd if not a 3rd opinion. Do not neglect your condition, your current doctor might be right but might also be wrong. Good luck."
Post Total Thyroidectomy Depression, is it normal? I am 4 weeks post TT. I have been on 100mcg of synthroid since the surgery. Two weeks ago, I felt really good, but now I am tired, really depressed, and irratated. I haven't gained any weight, which was my biggest concern before surgery, but I am in a constant fog from the depression/sleepiness.
Has anyone experienced anything similar? I am having my bloodwork done in a couple days. I was just wondering if anyone had experienced anything similar and if so, how long it took to feel back to normal.
I forgot to mention...my biopsy was clean - no cancer. That was a big relief.
jerrys_love replied: "You won't feel better until your TSH is regulated with Synthroid. The fog is bad, but for me, the aches and pains were worse. They're better, but they haven't gone away. About.com has one of the best forums I've found for information. Thyca.org is also a good source of information. You don't say if you had cancer or just had your thyroid removed. If you had cancer, you may have to go off meds ocassionally and you'll suffer this same "fog" every time. I take 137 mcg and some people need more. 100 seems pretty low. If you're lucky, you'll find a doctor who is willing to try you on Armour. If you ask others, it works better for all their symptoms. Most doctors just won't prescribe it. I'll say a prayer for you. I hope you have a support system behind you until you feel more normal."
I am morbidly obese, surgeons will not take my insurance for surgery, what am I to do,? I have been over weight all my life, have slimmed down to a normal size twice, gaiining it back in around 5 yrs, Now I am almost 60 yrs old, with a lot of health problems, which isnt going to improve til i get the weight off, Right now my problem is an extrememly low thyroid that isnt responding to medicine, I am to go to a endocrinologist the 13th to see if He can get my thyroid straightened out and build my metabolism, The chances of me loosing a substantial amount of weight now at this stage is very poor, they have told me so, Im not sure Id be a candidate for baractric surgery or not but another huge problem is I cannot find a surgeon in Alabama who does weight loss surgery, that will accept Medicade Alabama, and that is only insurance I have, Does anyone have any answers for me to a very complicated set of problems, Im at my rows end, I dont wanna die, Im too weak to exercise much on account of the non working thyroid,, does anyone have any special diets in my that I could loose some on without much execise that would get me down some just incase they ever can do the surgery,,,, right now im pretty much house bound, I cant hold out stamnia wise to go anywhere, but I am mobile, I lost 100 lb at weight watchers in 2004-05 but when the thyroid stopped working I gained it back, I went 7 months and didnt know my thyroid had stopped, Ive had the problem for 15 yrs and take synthroid, but the synthroid failed and I didnt realize it, Im not on a very strong dosage of synthyroid, I hope I havent provided so much info, that Ive got everyone confused,,, There are two things I need to know ou t of this mess, 1,does anyone know a surgeon in alabama who will accept medicade alabama, 2,,, can anyone reccomment a diet that I can loose on that doesnt require a lot of exerice, just until I hopefully get my stamnia built up so I CAN exercise,, my wt is over 400 lb, and I am so tired of it, this is biggest ive ever been,,,,,,,,,,,, thank you,,,,,,,,,,,, pat

Maybe try a Special K milkshake. [Replace them with Breakfast and Dinner]
Drink water, only water/milk.
Screw weight watchers, I tried that when I was 13, didn't work. [I was a fatass my whole life too.. -_-]
Good luck!

Dio replied: "My mom is in a similar state of health so over the past year I have been doing a tonne of research for her. The best source I could find is Dr Mark Hyman. He has written several books on metabolism and thyroid issues etc. I would highly recommend you go to his site and read as much free info as you can and maybe purchase a book if you can as well. The one he wrote about thyroid issues is really cheap. I hope this helps. I would put down some tips from his book here, but I don't remeber them all and I am reading another book about nutriton right now so I will get my facts confused. He really does provide a tonne of info and it is worth the read."
student182001 replied: "try an elliptical. It's really low impact and won't bother your knees. It will be even easier if you kind of get into a rhythm while on it. Also I knew some one who had a hyperthyroid and they removed the gland altogether is that an option? Sorry, I don't know of any surgeons. Maybe if you put your story out there in the media someone would volunteer to do the bariatric surgery for free. Go for lap-band because at least it's reversible. Good Luck!"
Billme replied: "You need to buy this book, and if you love your life, give up meat for 3 weeks and see if it helps you.
Dr. Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes.
You can do what the docs say is impossible. If you have diabetes, you can reduce your medication by 50%. Now don't by the book and throw away 1/2 of your meds. What you do is continue to measure your blood sugars 5 times a day (or what your doc says is your schedule) and then eat healthy. As your blood sugar levels fall, call the doc and say Doc mon, my sugars is low again, what drug do I toss today? He will says something like take less of drug a or more of b.
When it gets lower dosage of each drug, he might take you off of the stronger drugs and give you ones that are better for you. (I am guessing that the weight gain is due to diabetes?)
If you have not been tested for diabetes, then they should do that test and get your A1c level too.
Search on Craigslist.com for alkaline water. You can sample some for free. This will also help in your weight loss. According to the PH Miracle for weight loss, becoming more alkaline will help the insulin in your body become more effective.
Stop drinking any form of soft drinks right now. If you read The PH Miracle for Weight Loss, by Dr. Young, you will see that he recommends a very alkaline diet, and that is good for you. It will allow weight loss in a controlled fashion.
If you are eating a diet high in vegetables, beans and grains, with plenty of fruits, you will see the cholesterol drop off the scale, and you doc will say Mon what are you doing? Trying to put me out of business? Don't tell your friends about this, I will be through.
Eat oatmeal for breakfast, include 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. Eat plenty, it is good for you. Starving yourself to lose weight is the wrong way, your body has said "Feed Me" ever since your last weight watcher meeting. And it has recovered nicely.
Try this for dinner. Bake a sweet potatoe in the microwave. Peal and eat with cinnamon on top. Add some vegetables, green salad, (no dressing) and you have a healthy meal. Again no meat.
Make some split pea soup. 1 pound of split peas, 1/2 pound of lentils, 1 onion for flavor, some pepper, and 12 cups of water. Cook in a crock pot for 5 hours and it is ready. Add some chopped up carrots at the last hour if you want to. Add a little more water if it is gettin dry. I used 9.5 PH alkaline water in mine, it makes it a very alkaline meal, good for you, and helps you get over being to acidic.
When the body is to acidic, the excess acids are stored in fat cells, and those lead to weight gain.
You want to eat foods low on the Glycemic Index. These are foods that are absorbed into the bloodstream slowly, like a bowl of strawberrys, not ice cream. Spagetti with a tomato based sause, with mushrooms, parsley, oregano, and other spices, not meat or cheese. (Skip the meat for about 3 weeks and see if you feel better - You can to it) You will find that making simple dishes at home is also less expensive than eating out or buying prepackaged spagetti sause or garlic bread that is pre-buttered.
Did I mention to skip eggs, cheese, and most milk products. The reason is in Dr. Barnard's book. He says that many doctors are just as likely to die from diabetes as the public in general.
By giving your body a constnt supply of sugars all day long, in the slowest manner possible, then body will not be converting the "Spike" of sugars from fats and super intence sugar rush into body fats. When insulin is released, and you have a high blood sugar level, then that insulin will make you fat, because it takes the hih blood sugar level and makes it into body fat.
If you are not diabetic, then the pancreas will release the insluin as the blood sugar level starts to exceed 120, and will also make you fat. For diabetic, they are adding medication that will convert the (excess) sugars to fat.
Good Luck to you and your family,
Happy New Year !"
